چکیده
When a strong laser field ionizes atoms (or molecules), the electron wave packet that tunnels from the molecule moves under the influence of the strong field and can re-collide with its parent ion. The maximum re-collision electron kinetic energy depends on the laser wavelength. Timed by the laser field oscillations, the re-colliding electron interferes with the bound state wave function from which it © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The oscillating dipole caused by the quantum interference produces attosecond optical pulses. Interference can characterize both interfering beams—their wavelength, phase and spatial structure. Thus, written on the attosecond pulse is an image of the bound state orbital and the wave function at the re-collision electron. In addition to interfering, the re-collision electron can elastically or inelastically scatter from its parent ion, diffracting from the ion, and exciting or even exploding it. We review attosecond technology while emphasizing the underlying electron–ion re-collision physics.

From 1964, when mode-locking was discovered, until 2001, when the fi rst sub-femtosecond (that is, attosecond) pulses were produced1,2, laser pulse durations decreased by about three orders of magnitude (Fig. 1). Advances came through constantly refi ning known concepts of dispersion control and Kerr nonlinearities, aided by improved laser materials. Although a laser scientist from 1965 would h...
متن کاملAperiodic CrSc multilayer mirrors for attosecond water window pulses.
Extending single attosecond pulse technology from currently sub-200 eV to the so called 'water window' spectral range may enable for the first time the unique investigation of ultrafast electronic processes within the core states of bio-molecules as proteins or other organic materials. Aperiodic multilayer mirrors serve as key components to shape these attosecond pulses with a high degree of fr...
متن کاملStrong-field control and spectroscopy of attosecond electron-hole dynamics in molecules.
Molecular structures, dynamics and chemical properties are determined by shared electrons in valence shells. We show how one can selectively remove a valence electron from either Pi vs. Sigma or bonding vs. nonbonding orbital by applying an intense infrared laser field to an ensemble of aligned molecules. In molecules, such ionization often induces multielectron dynamics on the attosecond time ...
متن کاملIdeal laser waveform construction for the generation of super-bright attosecond pulses
Anew scheme is proposed to synthesize an ideal laser waveform via the superposition of few-cycle and half-cycle pulses with an optimized delay time or laser wavelengths and intensitymatching. The numerical analysis confirms that this scheme ismuchmore efficient for supporting the production of an isolated super-bright attosecond pulse, which provides away in thefinal realization for the attosec...
متن کاملAttosecond science in atomic, molecular, and condensed matter physics.
Attosecond science represents a new frontier in atomic, molecular, and condensed matter physics, enabling one to probe the exceedingly fast dynamics associated with purely electronic dynamics in a wide range of systems. This paper presents a brief discussion of the technology required to generate attosecond light pulses and gives representative examples of attosecond science carried out in seve...
